What Is the 2026 UK AI Strategy?
Published in January 2026 by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), the updated UK AI Strategy represents a significant evolution from the 2021 National AI Strategy and the 2023 AI Safety Summit commitments. At its core, the 2026 strategy positions the UK as a "responsible AI superpower" — aiming to capture the economic benefits of AI adoption while establishing globally trusted safety standards.

AI Safety: The AISI's Expanded Role

The strategy identifies 12 priority sectors — including financial services, legal tech, life sciences and clean energy — where regulatory sandboxes will be expanded to facilitate faster AI deployment.
Second, compliance: the strategy accelerates the introduction of sector-specific AI rules (built on top of existing FCA, ICO and sectoral regulator frameworks).
